I cloned my same era imac HD with tiger & 9 to an small old ata, installed it, and it works great. I had the same prob with OS9 generic Install Diskd, not even runnibg in the Superdrive!

Works flawless! Big prob when the ata died. You can't install 9 on the SATA, even though its partition was under 128G. I have a G4 PCI,"Yikes," the last bootable in 9 G4, with 9&x on its original ata HD+ I added a SATA 320 on a pci card for Tiger(new install there with migration from the ATA) later on. Read the OS9 reblessing the sys folder threads, and OS9 & OSX dual installation/ upgrade path threads.

After a few seconds of this the computer starts up on OS 10. I've tried booting from both CDs, and each time I am met by the folder with a flashing question mark in the middle. I have two versions of OS 9, OS 9.1 and OS 9.2. Right now my Mac is running OS 10 perfectly. I booted the computer up from the OS 10 CD successfully, erased Linux and installed OS 10.1 with two partitions. I had an old copy of Mac OS 10.1 laying around so I decided I would install that on the computer and worry about OS 9 later.

Initially the Mac had Linux installed, which posed a challenge because my friend had forgotten her password. Recently a friend of mine gave me her Power Mac G4 tower for free, and since then I've been trying my hardest to get OS 9 running on it (I have a old game - "Odyssey: The Legend of Nemesis" - which is the primary reason for running OS 9).
